Havelock began as a railroad stop known as Havelock Station. The city was formally established in 1959, but its transformation accelerated after Cherry Point was authorized during World War II.

Cherry Point is the story of modern Havelock
Congress authorized Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in 1941, initially clearing an 8,000-acre tract for construction. The installation later expanded to more than 13,000 acres and became the dominant force in Havelock's twentieth-century growth.
Cherry Point is home to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and Fleet Readiness Center East, making aviation not just part of the local economy but part of the city's identity.
That aviation culture is also visible to the wider community through the MCAS Cherry Point Air Show, a major public event held every two years. Military and civilian flight demonstrations, aircraft displays, and performances bring tens of thousands of visitors to the air station and make the show one of the region's signature events.

Shopping, dining and daily services
Havelock's commercial life is concentrated primarily along US 70 and the roads leading toward Cherry Point. Shopping, restaurants, grocery stores, pharmacies, and everyday services are close together and easy to reach.
Dining is casual and local, with Southern comfort food, seafood, and familiar neighborhood spots forming part of everyday life. The city is smaller than New Bern or Jacksonville, but most daily needs can be handled without traveling far.

GETTING AROUND
A gateway between New Bern and the coast
US 70 is Havelock's main transportation spine, connecting the city northwest toward New Bern and southeast toward Newport, Morehead City and the Crystal Coast. Local travel is strongly influenced by Cherry Point's gates and work schedules.
The regional position matters. Havelock is close enough to use New Bern for additional healthcare, shopping and historic attractions while still keeping the beaches and coastal communities of Carteret County within regular day-trip range.

Havelock is smaller and more military-centered than New Bern, but its location gives it a useful balance between the air station, forest and coast.
